Well, dry dog food is more balanced for them rather then try to make sure you have a little of each food group in with people food, that’s more difficult. plus they can start having deficiencies if your not giving the right kind and amount of raw food. I understand the fear about the contaminated pet food though too. Chicken is really the only meat they should have and yes cooked but no seasonings-not even salt, just boiled chicken. Steamed rice is good for them too. A combo of both is some what balanced and bland, so you won’t have to worry about upset tummies. Raw carrots are ok every once and a while. Hope this helps. ^_^
Oh and watch how much he eats. with any food it should be measured at each meal.

First off, for example of my dogs, I’ve tried giving them different dog food when I couldn’t get the kind that are so use to and they would refuse to eat it.. So therefore it was a huge waste of money to buy something they won’t eat…
I have one dog that loves vegetables, well I shouldn’t say just “ONE” they all love em..
I feed my dogs, right before we go to bed, Rice Krispies….My vet said it won’t hurt them… so its a bed time snack u might say…GOOD LUCK

Chicken is not the only meat they can have, and while cooked is fine…that defeats the purpose of a RAW diet.
Do alot of research as a good balance is needed to do this sucessfully. RAW is actually the best choice when done properly, if it isdone right, supplements should not be needed.
Also read up on the BARF diet and model prey diets and decide from there whats best for you based on how much work you want to put into it.

Create a video blog…instantly.
If you are in the financial position to do so, feeding raw is one of the best things you can do for your dog.
I found this website to be really informative:
Go through the whole thing, it has just about everything you could ever want to know.

I don’t know diddly squat about raw food, but i’m sure one of my contacts does. I starred for you!
Don’t listen to that “vet tech” (who i’m thinking isn’t really one)
Raw diets are the BEST thing for a dog to have…dry food is NO competition!
Vet’s and techs are taught nothing about canine nutrition in school.

Natural Diet
I feed both my dogs raw, and I honestly believe this is the best diet for them. Dogs’ diets should be mostly protein – they’re not geared towards large amounts of carbohydrates and grains like we are, and dry foods tend contain a lot of grain ‘fillers’. A switch to raw should be good for your dog with a weak stomach, as he’ll be digesting foods that he’s evolved to digest. The raw food diet is fantastic for their teeth and breath, and they often have a lot of fun with it too, especially the bones. Their poo tends to be a lot smaller, firmer, and isn’t foul smelling.
If you’re nervous about putting together your own food, or don’t have the time, there are quite a few raw food prepared meals that you can get from pet shops. I don’t think you need to worry too much about whether your dog will refuse to eat it. We actually got into raw food via a trainer with an older (about nine, if I recall) dog, who had stopped being able to digest his premium dry food. I don’t really know the details there, but I do know that she switched him to raw food, and he was absolutely fine from that point on. It may be strange for him at first, but he will become used to it if you stick with it.
Here’s a link which explains a little more about raw food. Don’t be put off by the URL – BARF stands for biologically appropriate raw food. Good luck!

Since you are already interested in raw, I can spare you of all the reasons to choose a it over “pet food”.
I used to feed innova, actually it was about two months ago, but I switched my dogs after researching on many sites. I started on. There, they have raw feeding resources under the canine cafe. It really is a matter of what you are looking for.
I also used these websites:,, and.
I have one dog that tends to eat everything, but her stomach is not the strongest. She is also 10 years old but the raw diet, after all the adjusting, went well for her. It took a good week to adjust and I recommend confining the dog to an area easy to clean at night from experience.
I feed my dogs chicken mostly, but they get the occassional fish, and turkey. I tend to avoid pork and beef, I dont like the idea of eating those animals, but I think eventually, if prices allow, I will have to offer my carnivores a different treat.
The raw diet consist of meat, bones, and organ. Bones and meat should go hand and hand, but your dog may not want to eat the organs, enticing the dog to eat them by freezing or cooking them until your dog is willing to eat them raw.
Your dog should do ok after adjusting to the diet. there are many yahoo groups and websites out there that can help the feeling you get when you first start feeding raw. I felt like I was walking on eggshells, and they were not helped by my mom telling me if my dog choked that i was responsible, but I took it the best way I knew how, and if I felt like I needed help/ reassurance, I could go to raw feeding resources and find something to let me know I had done the right thing. I think a lot of my angst came from me being vegan though.
I dont give my dogs cow products. It is not good for any mammal above weaning age. Milk products upset a dogs stomach.
Based on the ancedotal evidence that I have read, it would make sense to me, your dog should do find after adjusting to the new diet, but I can not stress enough that you should be prepared for accidents. Cleaner, shampooing any carpet afterwards, confinement until transition is done. The people who raw feed call it detoxing.
Most people that feed alot of grains in their dogs diet find that they digest their food after 12 to 14 hours, but meat digest in as little as 4 hours so it can be a pain to switch over in the begining. I would recommend switching to raw chicken first and slowly adding other meats and organ after the stools are “normal” again. (the poo wont look quite the same)
mashed pumpkin is supposed to help with constipated and loose stools so keep some around. Make sure it is the plain mashed pumpkin not the pie filling.
My dogs teeth and breath have done a 180, they all have white teeth and breath that doesnt really have any smell to it. The stools in the back yard dont have to be picked up anymore, they turn to dust instead, and that is with a great dane that weights 150lbs.
If you have anymore questions you can email me at or go to those sites I mentioned above. With the raw diet it is more about what your dog needs, their are no rules written in stone for the most part.
