Some depression can be cured by simple things like exercise, diet, sunshine, etc.
But, sometimes there is an actual chemical imbalance in the brain that can only be fixed by medication. It all depends.
Is it a state of mind? Or a chemical imbalance?
No matter what though – exercise releases endorphins, endorphins make you happy. Happy people aren’t depressed. So, get running!

i think exercise does . aerobics / yoga / jogging w/ your ipod of course ! && SWIMMING
but if you use food to relieve your stress, you’ll end up eating WAY too much, and yeah … you know were im headed . so i won’t reccomend food as the answer .

It can, but sometimes the brain chemistry is just too far out of whack to get it back to normal naturally.
I’d suggest first trying a more balanced diet, more rest & relaxation, more time with friends, more time outside (NOT exercising….just getting fresh air & sun), definitely exercising more (a gym membership might be in order), and then if you don’t find yourself at all improved, consider seeking professional help.

exercise definitely helps, but if u r truly depressed u should try to trace the cause and fix it. this can be hard, tho. maybe its feeling like u have no control of ur own over ur life, nd that its easier to just stop fighting for it?

Of course, diet and exercise are great! With all people, not just the depressed. Are you clinically depressed or are you suffering from situational depression? One is biological, one environmental/situational. If it is clinical, what kind? Perhaps, you need different meds? Perhaps the meds don’t work?

For some serious mental conditions, medication is very necessary. However, I do believe that exercise and eating right is a huge component to feeling great- in many cases eating the right foods and moving your body will totally cure your terrible mindset. The reason? Exercise=endorphins (those natural chemicals in your body that make you feel high) and natural, good, healthy food is called that for a reason. All the crap they put in boxes, tv dinners, fast food- it’s all packed with awful ingredients for your body that actually make you addicted to it which is why you keep buying and eating it.
Start exercising and eating right and see how you feel. If the depression persists talk to a professional and see what they have to say.
As for exercising during the winter- it’s definitely possible and can certainly be inexpensive. All you have to do is go out to Walmart and purchase a couple of weights or some kind of exercise device or you can even turn on some hoppin’ music and dance in the comfort of your own home. It’s all possible and very easy.
Good luck!

Exercise and diet CAN help mild depression. Exercise releases the natural chemicals that help make you feel better. Although I don’t believe it’s strong enough to help major depression. I used to run cross country years ago, so I’d run an average of 5+ miles a day. And walk to and from school. So I got a lot of exercise, yet, it didn’t seem to help much and I was still feeling down. (although I had “environmental reasons” why I was feeling down, such as home life, relationships, etc that where depressing me, not just random depression without cause).
Another natural approach, which some people swear works is called “5htp”. It’s suppose to naturally increase serotonin in your brain, just like eating turkey, exercising, etc helps to increase serotonin. Although will it increase it enough to help depression is the question. And they work differently than antidepressants – instead of naturally raising it, they re uptake serotonin and force it to stay in the brain longer. So antidepressants will have the strongest effect in terms of increasing serotonin.
There are also natural supplements called “st johns worth” and “Sam E” which many people claim works wonders for depression. Never personally tried them, but if you want to try the natural approach: Diet along with all the essential vitamins, exercise, and then adding a supplement such as 5HTP, St johns worth, or Sam E would be your best bet.
